A Brief Talk on Yahoo

Once a smash hit and went extremely famous country-wide for a time in many countries. Yahoo has long not been heard with big news, and also been forgotten by many people. However, it has recently become the focus in the world. If I may, what do you have in mind when speaking of Yahoo? The purple logo? Ask Yahoo? or Wretch? Interestingly, its prosperity and decline is now getting back to a popular topic for the time being.

Yahoo, founded in January 1994, incorporated on March 2, 1995, is globally known for a variety of web pages such as “Yahoo! Search”, “Yahoo! Mail”, “Yahoo! News” and the related services as well as websites. The truth is, its development grew with very fast pace, and the influence was rather great in Taiwan then, including auction, stocks, news and so on. Yet we all know things change and get replaced easily and relatively quickly in this modern and competitive world. The abrupt rise of Google- massive database and easy usage, and the appearance of Facebook- new and fashionable way to socialize, made Yahoo faded gradually by a large number of customers.

In 2001, Taiwan Yahoo announced the mergence with Taiwan Kimo, and therefore the Yahoo Kimo was born, which is still a name I am familiar with. After that, Yahoo also bought Wretch, a fad in early blog age. Unfortunately, Wretch dropped its curtain by the time Yahoo shut down its blog service. And the memory of the farewell statement is still like yesterday to me.

Many experts thought that the main reason Yahoo eventually failed because Yahoo missed the chance of merger and acquisition of Google and Facebook, but purchased Summly, Tunblr, Qwiki, Xobni, Rockmelt and BrightRoll instead. No matter what the real causes are, there is no denying that Yahoo has failed to nail the shots and lost most market.

Not long ago, Verizon bought Yahoo with 4.83 billion dollars. Maybe you can put this is a jubilant ending for both Yahoo and Verizon. The adorable purple Yahoo logo has eventually become history and still, was part of our life. Watching Yahoo’s rise and fall, I only wish it a better future. After all, we need to change ourselves, or the world will change us.
